History of the Mill

Nestled in the heart of Glan Conwy, Felin Isaf boasts three grade 2* listed buildings, making it one of the few remaining intact mills in the UK—how charming is that? Featuring two whimsical water mills that once ground clover, wheat, and an array of grains, this site has quite the story to tell. The earliest mention of Felin Isaf dates back to 1699, but the clover mill holds the title of the oldest building, dating to 1680. Fast forward to 1740, where the main corn mill joined the family, and let's not forget the oat drying house built in 1855, all just a hop, skip and a jump from our glamping site.

Can you believe these mills worked their magic until 1942? Sadly, they had to call it quits as snazzier machines made their grand entrance. But don’t worry—one of those historic contraptions is on display in the Original Clover Mill!

The mills were left to twiddle their thumbs for 36 long years until a passionate restoration kicked off in 1978, transforming them into a delightful museum, tea rooms, and events venue welcoming visitors until 2001. Now, both mills are a treasure trove of quirky machinery like cogged wheels, pulleys, and charming belt-operated sack hoists. Original pieces dance among some quirky finds from a local windmill, making every corner a slice of history.
